Pokemon Cosplay: Ho-Oh!

I am making a Ho-Oh cosplay ( [link]) ) to tide me over because the queen is a really big project. I new that when I started and I had only hoped that it would be done, But this is really a "Just in case" still. Anyway here are the details of the new costume.

Ho-Oh, The great guardian of the skies.
Ho-Oh is the version mascot of Pokémon Gold and its remake, HeartGold, appearing on the boxart of both.
And this is why I am making a Ho-Oh mascot costume.
The PAL version of Heart Gold will be coming out around the time of the next con here so it is perfect costume.

So if you don't read the link for Ho-Oh here is some info for you:
Ho-Oh is a phoenix-like bird with red being its dominant color. Ho-Oh also has yellow tail-feathers, a white underside, and green feathers at the tip of its wings. Ho-Oh has a green stripe on its neck, a yellow beak, black rings around its eye and a feathered-crest. Ho-Oh's wings are prismatic, causing it to trail a rainbow behind it.

About the costume I want to make:

I would Like to make a Mascot/Furry costume of Ho-Oh.
An anthro version, Though Ho-Ohs form can easily hide the human form.

-Undersuit (got that from my Tauren costume : D)

-Camel Pack (optional but I would like it, I was very thirsty and exhausted in the Tauren and I didn't take water with me)

Wings:
-Gloves
-Fur, Red, White, Green
-Stuffing/Padding (this is a maybe I don't think I will need it)

Tail:
-Chicken Wire
-Wire
-Duct/Fabric tape or Foam
-Heavy lifting/Kidney belt (Don't know where to get or what to get)

feet:
-Heeled Shoes/Boots
-Foam
-Snaps
-Elastic
-Fabric, Black, White

Making of ideas:

Head:
Will be easy just use balaclava method Hopefully I can find a good balaclava and Styrofoam head. Thought I should add, since I thought of this now, lol, That I will be making the beak out of foam so it is soft and squishes. (with my Tauren her nose and horns hit every thing I couldn't see ): it was a frustrating thing and is shocked me when it happened. I scare easy, in the jump out at you way. I don't keep a high awareness of my surroundings especially when I have head phones oh lol.) Also the head feathers I have had along think over it since I really hated the first mock up. [link] , So I am going to put wire in between foam and sculpt the foam... I just don't know any more ):

Body:
Ether use the pattern I already have or cut up my duct tape dummy, ether way I need to make a new leg pattern and change the arms.

Wings:
I want these attached along the bodies side. shouldn't be to hard, I hope.

Tail:
I will need to make a chicken wire base with wire feathers sticking out. I have written up a guide for my self I might post it with the tail later, but the idea is to cover the base in fur then cut the fur so you can put the feathers in. Then I will need to farsen it to a large belt so it wont fall and sag.
I am worried it will bend if people bump into it but then again I will have a handler that can straiten it out before photos or going on stage.

Ahh right now I hate it sooo much.... I just dont know why I just think I have done it horribly wrong... God dam my self-esteem! I just want it to turn out well and I think I have done this the wrong way!

Feet:
I have finished these but here is what I did.
I went out and got some shoes from a life line (opshop, err goodwill? for usa). They where High heels with a large base (sorry don't have a pic of them with out any thing). Then I put foam on top to shape the toes, and foam for the claws. Tape over the toes and shoes, then cut it off to create a pattern. Cut the fabric and sewed it up on the sewing machine also I made my leg cover at the same time. Though I found a problem with attaching them. I wanted them to be able to separate but there was no good way to do it. In the end I hand sewed them together and it looks great! Then I made the claws, cut and shaped foam then covered in tape cut apart then fabric and then hand sewed the claw fabric and sewed them to the toes!

Queen isn't going to be done in time for supernover 2010!
So I will be going in a different costume.
I hope to get most of the work done on her over the holidays and maybe I could pull through...
But I don't see it happening.

I am Samantha (pref Nakoo) and would like to make a Xenomorph Queen and Colonial Marine.

This is a big task and I am looking forward to it all!
To start off here is some info and links on the costumes and what I think I should do, Any tips would be great!
This is to be my pride and joy, An Alien Queen costume.

Xpenmorph Queen

This is not going to be an exact screen replica. She is going to be based on a different host spice to humanoids, cattle or a small animal. I am taking creative licence on this project and making her more like some of H.R. Giger's earlier drawings, having a more 'human' structure.

She will be made of a under suit covered in latex (So far my best option for detail). This idea came from Sekular Predator costume:

I believe it will work well for creating the illusion of the Aliens spindle like structure.

The outer 'armour' I am unsure what they will be made of. Right now I am working on a wire base for a expanding foam fill then some kind of clear coat on top though I don’t know what it can be covered in so I will be experimenting plenty
I found this Priss from Bubblegum Crisis 2040, the armour is made of Model Magic and Plaster bandage. [link]
I do not think this will work for what I want.

So I am working on the idea of having a painted textured under suit, with 'armour' pieces on top, vercroed down or not attached to the under suit.
The back spikes will be attached to a wire and chicken fence frame. I believe I will reinforce them or the hole structure with stronger wire/metal, again covered in Expanding foam. I hope this keeps everything light weight.
The chest will be a thick wire frame and chicken fence in between with a clasping seam along the sides of the body. This will support the spikes and some of the tail weight.

The tail will be attached to a codpiece That will have a tight belt in it. I hope this will support the weight of the tail.
The codpiece will be made the same again with a wood board that the tail will screw into at the back.
Leather gloves with detail and the extra thumb and finger extensions added for the Queen look (gaps between the fingers but joined at the joints).
The feet will be high heals with the wire foam combo. This should be easy, though I believe it will hurt to where. The price I pay for my beautiful Queen.
For the head I am mounting all the armature onto a helmet. The crest will hopefully be lighter than I expect though there are cavities at the front of the face for weight.
Also I am thinking of having a visa as the front on the head so I can see. Very unsure though ):
The teeth are made of balsa wood. They will be painted and then cotted in clear coat.
I would like to install fans and speakers in the head but have no experience in electronics. The fans seem simple enough though I am unsure of how to complete them and how I should mount them.
Do I need openings where the fans are? Can they blow cool air in my face? Or is it better to have them as exhorts fans?
With the speaker I am thinking rig it to a MP3 and just have the buttons in my glove. Though again I am unsure.

Colonial Marine:

This is for my 6'6" male friend.
The first way, that you all love, is paper craft. For that I would have to wait till the new game is realised, because I don’t have the required time to model, and I don’t have the skills to convert into a paper craft model. UMV unwrapping is confusing enough! (also my game cause wouldn’t let me make copyright stuff for what we are doing.)

So I was thinking model it out of clay and Vacuum form or Fiberglas it. This is my preferred method but I need to find a few things. I need a manikin to model the armour on, the clay I need to find locally, the fibreglass and some info on using that (can easily find here or ask friends) or build a vacuum form table with heating element.
I like the idea of vacuum forming the armour then I can make it for friends to, but I think a fibreglass base would work better.

Tips would be great!


The Pulse Rifle, makes a beautiful noise. I am thinking of paper crafting this, but I have no idea of how it could work. From what I can see of this site is that you have to resin and fibreglass the inside of the pieces, and that wouldn’t work for a weapon. I could buy a really expensive ‘wall mount’ that isn’t a true prop, but I would not like to do that. I would like to be able to install the counter, sound board and LEDs into what ever gun I get.
This is the Module that was sold though I am unsure of some where to find it now.

I'm feeling kinda bad because of how badly my tauren cosplay went.
